SELF REFLECTION
Kent Yong
During the completion of this project on premarital sex in Indonesia, I had the opportunity to delve into a topic that was not only sensitive but also deeply rooted in cultural and religious norms. This project allowed me to learn more about the extent to which the topic of premarital sex is discussed in Indonesian society and to examine my own personal values. Not only did I learn more about the topic, but I also gained more understanding by analyzing it from numerous other philosophical perspectives, including Western and Eastern philosophy, ideology, logic, ethics, and the Philosophy of Sejahtera.
During compiling all the data from the survey, one of the most significant realizations that I had was the extent to which the topic of premarital sex remains taboo and quite stigmatized. In Indonesia, most of the respondents avoid sex outside of marriage due to their religious beliefs and the awareness of the health risks premarital sex possess. There are only a small group of people that are willing to engage in premarital sex. Furthermore, the philosophy of logic enhances my ability to engage in critical analysis of the arguments proposed by different individuals while considering both the rational and irrational aspects of their viewpoints. Overall, I had a deeper understanding and gained a deeper appreciation for the nuanced and complex issues surrounding premarital sex in Indonesia.
As for the group work process, everything went quite well. Being a group leader for this project, I did several parts, namely Research Objectives, Research Methodology, Editing Website, and Editing the Research template. The task delegation was a little bit confusing as there were 10 members in the group. Fortunately, all the members did all the tasks well and submitted them on time. However, I do hope that in the future the group can do more bonding, hence increasing the chemistry which can increase the effectiveness of the group work. Last but not least, I would like to express my gratitude to Ms. Siti Noor Amyah Kasbullah for guiding us throughout this assignment process.

For me, learning about Falsafah has been interesting. I’ve managed to learn a lot of new things like epistemology, logic, metaphysics, etc. a topic which I was not that familiar before I start this semester. I’m glad that I got the chance to learn more about philosophy and to understand how to utilize it in my daily life, so that I can be wiser. The project concerning pre-marital sex has also been educative. I was not that familiar with this topic before, and thought that it was a taboo. But I’m glad that many people have started to get sexual education and that everyone is at least willing to be more open to it. I also am glad that at least, there’s a chance for me to get deeper into the issue at hand, and knowing more about the problem that has struck many Indonesian youths in regards to pre-marital sex. Indeed, in my opinion, the issue of sex is not something that should be hidden. And I hope that people stop view sex as something that should be a taboo. The project for me has ran smoothly, and thankfully, everyone seems participative and cooperative to do the project well. And in my opinion, in the future, it might be better if this topic can be further expanded in the future and more people can also discuss the issue openly and honestly. Hopefully, the video and the research template can be used to inspire people to engage in more holistic and multi-dimensional understanding of the issue and refrain from judging unnecessarily.

In conclusion, I have learned a lot about my thoughts regarding premarital sex through the process of self-reflection. It is clear that throughout time, as a result of my upbringing, experiences, and exposure to various perspectives, my personal ideas and values on this subject evolved. Premarital sex can be a meaningful and consenting expression of intimacy that can strengthen interpersonal connections as well as confidence, and this is something I have come to value. The relationship each individual has with premarital sex is highly personal and subjective, though, and this must be realised. I've become more welcoming and open-minded, but I also recognise that people have different perspectives based on their experiences, beliefs, and values. Promoting understanding, empathy, and open discussion requires honouring and respecting these many different points of view. This self-reflection has also made me conscious of the difficulties that I periodically have to balance my changing opinions with the social and cultural norms that were instilled in me through my upbringing. I can continue to confront any remained sentiments of guilt or criticism by critically analysing these conflicts and analysing their causes. With the use of this procedure, I may promote self-acceptance, self-compassion, and a more open-minded view of human sexuality. Going future, I want to approach premarital sex discussions with empathy and honesty. I am aware that rejecting or disregarding opposing viewpoints prevents both growth as an individual and productive conversation. I may widen my awareness while creating a stronger feeling of tolerance by actively conversing with those who have different points of view.
In the end, this self-reflective report has helped me understand the complexities of the issue of premarital sex and motivated me to keep exploring and learning. I hope to encourage growth in oneself, contribute to constructive conversations, and advance a more inclusive and sympathetic understanding of sexuality by embracing self-awareness and appreciating various points of view.

In this course, we are able to learn the concept of philosophy and become more aware to some social issues in different countries. The topic of our group project is Premarital sex in Indonesia, which I think is necessary to educate people and raise awareness to people about this topic.
Through this project, I have learned a lot about premarital sex in Indonesia and many perspectives from various ages, races, genders and many more based on our survey and our interviews. However, the amount of awareness in Indonesia is still relatively low. By conducting the survey among Indonesia people, gave me realization of how many people being familiar with the topic of premarital sex and how social norms influence their decisions. I also gain a lot of knowledge of how premarital sex is viewed from various philosophical perspectives, including western and eastern philosophy, logic, ideology, theology, ethics, and philosophy of sejahtera.
I've also noticed that fair responsibility distribution and trust in our team members are crucial for the successful completion of our research project. I was assigned the tasks of findings and discussions (theology) and website editor. Furthermore, under the efficient leadership of our leader, all members are responsible and finish the assignment on time. During this project, I also discovered that my time management skills may be enhanced, and I feel that all members can provide more ideas to the project's enhancement at the meeting. But, in overall, I'd say our group did an excellent job on this assignment.

So from this project, I learned that working in a group of 10-11 people is not easy to coordinate without a leader. However, with a correct task delegation this assignment is not hard as it seems. Moreover, I also found that the number of premarital sex is shockingly higher than I expected. Not only that, I also have a better understanding about ethics, logics, and western and eastern philosophies regarding premarital sex and how to connect the way of thinking to the premarital sex itself. While compiling the answer from the surveys our group made, I found it surprisingly many of Indonesians have a good sex education and know how to elaborate it well throughout the surveys. One thing that caught my attention the most is the first question on section 2, which is about how people perceive about sex. The answer that appear the most from respondent was highest form of love and loving each other, seeing the answers make me change how I perceive about premarital sex itself, As I see it as a something important to do with the loved ones.
From the group assignment, I realized that there is one thing that can be improved from our group which is get to know each other more. Since our group formed in the early semester and I haven’t properly get to know some of my team member, thus the group is made purely for the assignment purposes that not meant to be expanding connection and friendship.

At the beginning of this assignment, I discovered myself researching a topic with enormous significance and personal connection as I worked on this group assignment on eastern philosophy. on-depth analyzed premarital sex from the standpoint of Eastern philosophy in this essay, specifically Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. Exploring other viewpoints and learning how these ideologies approach the subject in terms of moral and spiritual development has been an intriguing trip. The importance of temperance and moderation in Eastern philosophies was one of the most crucial things I discovered. Hinduism emphasizes abstinence and refraining from premarital sex, whereas Buddhism promotes balance in all facets of life, including sexual behavior. This highlights the significance of maintaining equilibrium and exercising self-control in order to live a good life. The idea that moral judgements should take into account cultural norms and context is another insightful idea. Hinduism acknowledges that social mores and individual circumstances can affect people's moral perceptions on premarital sex. This comprehension recognizes the complexity of human experiences as well as the necessity for careful ethical analysis. In addition, I've discovered that Eastern philosophies like Confucianism and Taoism frequently place a high priority on communal welfare and social peace. Premarital sex is frowned upon in Confucianism in order to preserve social harmony and raise pious offspring. However, Taoism takes a more forgiving stance, valuing spontaneity and harmony with the Tao as long as one does not do damage to others. As I look back on this study, I think it has given me a useful perspective on the divergent views of Western and Eastern philosophies on premarital sex. While Eastern philosophy lays more of a focus on harmony, moderation, and adherence to established norms, Western philosophy frequently emphasizes individual liberty and personal independence. A broader perspective on ethical concerns and more cultural sensitivity can be fostered by understanding these various points of view.
Overall, this study has expanded my awareness of the various perspectives on premarital sex held by Eastern philosophy, emphasising the value of harmony, balance, and self-discipline. It has emphasised the philosophical and cultural divergences between the East and the West while providing insightful information on the moral, ethical, and spiritual issues raised by this issue.

I have learned a lot about the changing views on premarital sex while working on this project, which focuses on Western philosophy. I've learned that Western intellectuals, who were first influenced by Judeo-Christian principles, frequently saw premarital sex as ethically reprehensible. Consequences-based theories, promoted by thinkers like John Stuart Mill, posed a challenge to this perspective by examining the social and personal repercussions of such sexual encounters. In addition, modern philosophers like Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir emphasised individual freedom and the rejection of social conventions, arguing for the right to have sex with someone who is not your spouse.
I think it would have been helpful to go into more detail about the precise ethical frameworks and philosophical arguments driving the changing views towards premarital sex in Western philosophy in order to better our research. It would have been more beneficial to examine the ethical ideas of other significant philosophers, such as Immanuel Kant or Friedrich Nietzsche, to have a more thorough knowledge of the topic.
The influence of socioeconomic and cultural variables on the shifting attitudes regarding premarital sex in Western philosophy may have also been added to our analysis. A better background for understanding the development of ideas would have been provided by looking at historical occurrences, social movements, or changes in gender roles.
As a result, this effort has improved my comprehension of how Western philosophy is changing its views on premarital sex. Further investigation of the ethical frameworks, cultural effects, and comparison with Eastern philosophy would have deepened our understanding and provided a more thorough examination of the topic, which would have improved our project.

Through this assignment, I learned some new things. To finish this assignment, we need intense discussion. Because of that, the important thing in doing this task is communication between group members. Good communication will produce good results. Whatever problems that we faced when doing our task, we have to communicate it to other group members, so that our teammate can help us to complete the task as soon as possible. Besides communication, from this assignment I also learned a lot about premarital sex. For most people sex before marriage is something that is not normal. However, there are some people who think sex before marriage is normal. There is no absolute conclusion to the problem of premarital sex. Everyone has their own perspective. However, whatever the reason, logically, sex before marriage is unacceptable. Sex before marriage can cause unwanted pregnancy without official relationship status. In Indonesia, sex before marriage is not accepted. For Indonesians, premarital sex is something that is taboo.
Relevant suggestions from this group work that I can give is group members should be more active to express their opinions. If group members are more active, there will be more ideas about concepts for this group work. Besides that, we should be able to get more questionnaire respondents. The more respondents, the more relevant information that can be provided. Maybe, we can add survey respondents up to more than 100 people. However, overall, I am very proud of my group. Each member did their work quickly and precisely.

At the beginning of the assignment, my group mates and I did lots of research looking through the origins, motives and results of premarital sex. We then made our research more specific by tackling this subject in the context of it happening in Indonesia. Creating questionnaires gave us an insight into how the general public, specifically students, thought of the matter. An overwhelming majority believed that it was important to have non-judgemental discussions about pre-marital sex and to not treat it as a taboo topic.
We then dove into the philosophical differences between the West and the East. While there are religions and beliefs in Western society that forbids pre-marital sex, the consensus is that people should have the freedom to do so. On the other hand, eastern society puts more emphasis on maintaining culture and following religion. While there are cases of people not having a problem with it, pre-marital sex is a lot less common in Eastern countries when compared to their Western counterparts.
Overall I have learned a lot during these weeks while completing the group assignment with my group mates. One prime example was how the Indonesian government is criminalising premarital sex. My field is focused more on studying the ideologies behind premarital sex. I highlighted the three movements: modernism, post-modernism and relativism. While there were modernists that believed in the power of truth and science post-modernists became more sceptical. Relativism supported and challenged both beliefs and posits that these beliefs are subjective and that no one solution/belief is correct. While there were some difficulties with getting relevant sources on this matter, this assignment definitely helped improve my skills in research. There are little to no changes I would make if I had to start all over again, but I would definitely put more emphasis on analysing the results we got from the questionnaire.

Through this project, I have deepened my understanding of philosophy and premarital sex. | initially found it difficult and complicated to work on this assignment. I appreciate the fact that my group mates believed in me and helped me complete the mission. When I started researching this project, I discovered that there are many different views on premarital. While researching several academic papers and news articles about premarital sex during the project and discovered that this is such a pressing question in today's society. Team members were always there to help and help me find solutions when I'm stuck. We a shared ideas with each other. I hope our project can help society raise awareness of premarital relationships sex. In addition, I sincerely wish that the government can take serious steps to raise awareness through different platforms such as education, publicity and legislative process. It was nice to meet a new team of very nice people that can work well together in limited amount of time to complete the project. I also learned about the nature of teamwork and the importance of communication among team members. Overall, I enjoyed working with the team and felt happy when we got the work done, and I am extremely grateful to our lecturer and my team for their help.
